17 Jan 2020 AI: Commission’s draft White Paper unveiled
The European Commission’s draft White Paper on AI has been recently unveiled. The final version of this document should be published in February, hence complying with Ursula von der Leyen’s pledge to present an initiative on AI during the first 100 days of her mandate.
The Commission considers amending current safety and liability legislation, as well as introducing requirements that increase accountability and transparency in the design of AI systems.
Moreover, as announced by Euractiv and Politico, the Commission mentions the possibility to adopt a temporary ban on facial recognition in public spaces. However, the document also underlines that it is not the preferred option and that the emphasis should be put on the full implementation of GDPR.
